The following are the basic rules of Ultimate THROTON. This is a brand new game. The rules and game play regulation are in development. Input from players and coaches is encouraged and welcomed. All comments and suggestions will be accumulated, posted, and discussed so that the best possible game configuration evolves and continues to evolve.

See Ultimate THROTON in the photos page.

Here is where Ultimate THROTON starts:

  1. The Court and the Game Equipment: Ultimate THOTON is played on a basketball court. Two THROTON Capture Targets are placed onto the basketball rims. The out of bounds rules apply here as they do in any court based game.
  2. Game Play Start: THROTON possession at the start of play is determined by a shoot out. Away team shoots first. One player from each team, from mid court, shoots at their respective target. That player's team stands under their basket. First player to hit the shot, his teams grabs the THROTON and play begins.
  3. Teams: A regulation game has five players per team.
  4. Scoring: A team must successfully launch a THROTON at the Capture Target and drop it thru the basketball hoop to score. Different score value for different shot ranges or types of shot is being contemplated (half court, etc.). This is an area for experimentation and discussion.
  5. Air Balls: All shoots must be taken from outside the basketball three point arch. Any shot not contacting the rim, the target or the backboard and going out of bounds is an air ball - very bad news. Penalize the shooter's team two points and take away possession of the ball.
  6. THROTON Advancement: The THROTON is advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players can not run with the ball and have three steps to come to a complete halt and establish a plant(ed) foot. The THROTON passer has seven seconds to throw after receiving the THROTON. The closest defender, guarding the passer, counts out loud to seven, starting as the receiver touches the THROTON.
  7. THROTON Possession: If a pass goes  incomplete (out of bounds, drop, block, interception, etc.), the opposing team's closest player immediately takes possession of the THROTON and has seven seconds to complete a pass or gives up the ball.
  8. Alternates: Substitute Players may replace players in the game after a score or during any timeout.
  9. Player contact: Physical contact is not allowed between players. Picks and screens are legal but no contact can be initiated in the act. If contact is made, a foul is called and the THROTON is given up or shot. Ultimate THROTON is a physical game so some bumping and hand checking is allowed but it is not a contact sport.
  10. Fouls: If contact occurs between two players, the player initiating the contact is called for a foul.
  11. When a foul occurs, Penalty Shot:  Possession of the THROTON is forfeited or the passer is given an immediate and unobstructed shot at the target without movement of the plant(ed) foot. The player has three seconds to shot, no delays and the team retains possession.
  12. Officiating: In a self officiated game, the players are responsible for all play and foul calls. Players resolve their own disputes, i.e. if the player called for the foul disagrees, the play is redone. In an officiated game, the Official makes all the calls and can not be challenged.
  13. The Game's Ultimate Goal: Ultimate THROTON is an athletic and challenging game meant to be played all out with good sportsmanship, team spirit, and fellowship the ultimate goals.
